Stephen Boss is a designer, typographer, and the founder of Emboss Fonts. Inspired by the Cranbrook tradition of conceptual, post-structuralist design, he launched the foundry in the mid-1990s with a single insert in Baseline Magazine and a dial-up connection. Clients quickly called him The Digirado—a digital renegade who understood the technology but refused to let it sanitize the work.

His typefaces have been licensed to Netscape, DC Comics, and Pixar; featured in Publish, Timing Zero, and Typodarium; and used by brands ranging from Bumble and bumble to JP Morgan Chase. He has designed broadcast titles for PBS Frontline and the feature documentary The Disruptors (CBS Mornings), created identities for cultural institutions including Snug Harbor, and taught typography at the School of Visual Arts and Kolding Design School. He is the author of Digital Type Design and co-author of The New Web Typography.
